The washer is used to protect the surface of the part from damage by the nut during tightening, to increase the bearing area of the nut, bolt head or screw, to eliminate the possibility of self-unscrewing nuts during vibration and other cases.

Washers are made by cutting from sheet material or turning from bar metal. Washers are flat round, depending on the size, washers are distinguished:

• normal according to GOST 11371-78
• enlarged according to GOST 6958-78 (accuracy class A and C)
• especially large according to GOST 28848-90 (accuracy class C)
• reduced according to GOST 10450-78 (accuracy classes A and C)
